Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a vibrant and diverse community, home to over 3,000 students, each bringing their unique backgrounds and cultures to the school. With more than 50 languages spoken at home, the school is a melting pot of cultures, reflecting the rich diversity of its student body. For many, school serves as a sanctuary—a place where they can feel safe, supported, and part of a community. Our high school has been implementing the NJ PBSIS model to help foster this diverse environment and recognize the importance of mental health in students' overall well-being.

We are looking for community support to help us build our rewards system and continue to offer the Academic Aces Ice Cream Social.

Each marking period, one or two of our departments of teachers (Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, ELA, Special Education, Physical Education, Fine Arts, etc.) nominate students who have shown improvement and deserve to be recognized. These students are not always the top achieving student in the class. They can be a student who has struggled but is working incredibly hard to achieve academic success. An Academic Ace doesn't need to be always getting an A, but they need to be consistently working at their level and striving to do their best.

This ice cream social is a highlight each year. Students work hard to be nominated and no student can be nominated more than once a year. We try to have at least one hundred students each marking period recognized. Creating an environment where students can achieve gives strength to their own individual mental health, allowing them the freedom to discuss their needs and not feeling stigma. We are a safe place for all the students and try to create a culture of positivity through the PBSIS (positive behavior supports in schools) system.
