My Students

My high-achieving, college-bound students are inquisitive, reflective, and artistic. They are hungry to learn in an environment that promotes equity, curiosity, and play. My school is a unique public school experience, as our campus is home to grades 4-12. Our faculty is committed to its students and their success on a campus that is known for its true sense of community and life-long relationships.

My challenge is to encourage the development of the interior lives of young people through writing and literature.

One way to do this is by enriching that curriculum with skills and experiences that expose how literature is related to art, science, philosophy, theater, technology, and their own lives.

My Project

As my students study the themes of Tolstoy and Nietzsche, Camus' classic story of a man encountering the indifferent universe is more important now than ever. The Stranger will enrich my students' understanding of their place in an absurd world.

How can we make sense of a universe that refuses to give up its meaning until we force it to?

What better metaphor is there for our lives right now that Sisyphus pushing his boulder ceaselessly up his mountain, only to watch it fall back down as it reaches the top? These are some of the intellectual burdens my students continue to face right now, echoing the feelings we have as we, too, push through remarkable times.

Camus' novel will complete a large unit on how thinkers have dealt with the problem of suffering at the hands of an indifferent world, hopefully providing clarity as well as uncovering a way to live a meaningful life despite the absurdity around us.
