My Students

Hola, Ciao, Здравствуйте, Nǐ hǎo, and مرحبا are some of the ways students can say "Hello!" in my class. I am lucky enough to teach 29 students who ALL speak another language at home, in addition to learning how to read, write, and speak English in school.

Our class is like a box of crayons: everyone is different, but all differences are accepted and embraced.

They are smart, hard-working, caring first graders who love learning in different ways, including using songs, pictures, and hands-on materials.

My students are natural investigators. They love coming to school and asking questions. I love researching the answers with them and seeing their faces light up when things come to life.

My Project

My first grade students excel when they see a model of what they need to do. I teach English language learners and it is super helpful for them to have a sample to follow before they complete a task independently. We often do group writing, or whole class writing, to make sure everyone participates and has an understanding of the task that needs to be completed. I love modeling on a dry erase board, using different colored markers, but our current board was ruined when our classroom was used as a “Rec Center” during quarantine. The board was written on with permanent marker, and the residue makes it really hard to see new words. New words are also not erased well.
