This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you gave blood or wanted to give blood? What an amazing experience to give someone a vital part of yourself to help save their life. Blood typing students provides them with key information about how they can help others in the future while reinforcing their learning.

My students have become an integral part of my heart and soul since I started teaching 2 years ago.

They are incredible, high-spirited and hard working individuals. My students currently attend a high performing, but still low income, public charter school in California. Our school is tuition-free and is dedicated to preparing 100% of our students on a path to college and leadership. These students come from underprivileged homes, and approximately 75% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of literacy backgrounds, from first-grade readers to twelfth grade level readers, making literacy and scientific inquiry an intense daily challenge in my classroom.

My Project

The blood typing kits I have requested will give each student in my class the ability to learn about the four different blood types, as well as the Rh factors involved with blood typing. These kits will help make biological information about genetics and physiology more interesting to students and deepen their understanding as they will be able to see and learn about how these processes play out in their own bodies. By learning more about these factors, it will help them be more successful in future biology courses and careers, such as hematology. This activity will also hopefully inspire them to help support their community through blood drives.

Donations to this project will help my students learn more about physiology and genetics and the blood flowing through their veins.

It will help them understand the biological importance of blood, but also hopefully inspire them to give more to their communities by sponsoring and participating in blood drives once they learn more about their own blood.
