My Students

Do you remember the first time you were so close to finishing a project, but just couldn't because your body wouldn't move? Well, my students are faced with that frustration everyday, as they are so close to completing a task except there disabilities prevent them from moving there arms and legs.

I'm an Occupational Therapist and our students have disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida and come from various cultures, economic and social challenges in New York City.

I work with students to overcome there disabilities and present ways to seize the future and maximize their abilities. Though our school community has faced all manner of hardship and more than our share of tragedy, our students are amazingly talented and ambitious. Utilizing technology is a huge component when giving our students the opportunity to focus on the future within the school setting. As we focus on getting students to function as independently as possible when completing class assignments, communicating with peers and researching appropriate vocations. Showing students with just the movement of you finger you can access the world and connect with people is major stepping stone when looking forward. Unfortunately, Special Education resources are scarce.

My Project

This requested Galaxy tablet will be used by my students and myself in the classroom to gain a better understanding of overcoming physical challenges, and how to use technology to become successful. The knowledge that the students, and I garner from this tablet will help us gain understanding and practice perseverance, which is a crucial step to becoming successful within life. We will also use this tablet to research, and review, which technologies we would like to use when living independently after school. After reviewing the technologies we will decide which ones would be useful to each students diagnosis and we can further educate the school community as a whole. By educating our community about independence with a disability, we can help to build bridges of understanding and a culture of empathy.

Use the ability in your disability.

As educators we must strive to give our students not only facts and information, but a moral education as well. Empathy is a trait that is critical to moral development and it needs to be taught and nurtured if we are to have a constructive and compassionate society. Students should be instructed at a young age about how we are alike but also how we are different and have unique talents as well as challenges.
