This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Busy hands will help keep the mind on task as students who are learning new sounds can write the letters they are hearing and learning rather than just passively looking and listening during their library lesson times. Making sounds visible guarantees that students are visualizing the concept.

My students are hands on, active, and like to be engaged in our neighborhood public school.

Most of the students at my school are Hispanic. The kids at my school are very good and care about each other and their teachers. Their parents are hard workers who can not volunteer during the school day because of jobs. The majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch, approximately 82%, and many of our students have large families with more than three siblings.

My Project

The lapboards will allow my students to interact with the new letter sounds by writing the letters and drawing objects that begin with the sound. Keeping their hands involved will help them to create a new connection within their schema, what they already know. Research says that in order to learn something new, it must make a connection with something already known. The lapboards will help students to focus and think about the sounds and to connect with words they already know that begin with the letter. I will ask them to write the letter and to draw things in their schema that begin with that particular sound. I ask students to think about "text-to-self connections" which helps them to remember the new sounds. They share the personal connection they have with that letter. The lapboards will allow them all to share simultaneously which will keep a large group of students involved in the lesson.

Please help make learning new sounds visible to young learners by providing a lapboard for them to use while learning new sounds.
