This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Pre-K through fifth grade elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation. Many of my students live in nearby public housing or are from single-parent homes.
Many of my first grade students have special needs, are repeating a grade or are struggling academically to achieve grade-level expectations.
They need essential resources to maximize learning opportunities to ensure they do their best work every day.
My Project
I am requesting an assortment of books with topics that focus on having happy, healthy minds and bodies. The books, such as I Am Peace and ABC Mindful Me introduce simplified mindfulness principles. These books feature colorful illustrations of children and animals, as well as playful rhymes to explain mindfulness. These book will be placed in our 'Chill Zone' or quiet corner where my students can read them, calm down and begin practicing the mindfulness concepts to promote physical and mental wellness. The lavender diffuser and stress balls will help to create a calming atmosphere that eliminate stress and tension so they can focus on learning and academic success.
Mindfulness books will help teach them techniques on proper breathing, compassion, gratitude, and kindness.
These key concepts will help them self-regulate, improve their concentration, listening skills, and ability to manage emotions, stress, and anxiety.
