My Students

How can we make our school better? My students responded, "by keeping our school clean."

My students are fun loving teenagers with multiple disabilities ranging from physical disabilities, autism, down syndrome to mental retardation.

They LOVE TO LEARN and HELP OTHERS. They do not allow their disabilities to impede their thirst for knowledge and their yearning to be as independent as possible. Our school is an occupational training center, which means we teach life skills to prepare our students for work and make them as independent as possible when they graduate.

My Project

My students' eagerness to make an impact on their environment for themselves and for their peers, created our building maintenance class and we are called the "Clean Team." My students were put off by the unclean tables, chairs and floor in the school cafeteria. They wanted to be able to go to lunch and not have to worry about sitting in ketchup. Thus, my students came up with the idea of cleaning the cafeteria after breakfast so that they could enjoy their lunch period with their friends without worrying about getting their clothes dirty. This then led to the discussion of keeping the classrooms and offices in the school clean. ABC Family, we need your help to keep our school clean and to see my students idea continue.
