My Students

My Autistic preschool class is consists of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5. Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. We use a number of methods & techniques to modify the curriculum and materials to fit each student's individual learning style. Autistic children tend to be visual and hands on learners. We use a variety of pictures, charts and visual representations as well as concrete and hands on materials so they can use their tactile senses and explore materials. Many of the students are working on learning their ABC’s and using a variety of activities to teach this skill is important as not one of them learns the same.

My class is an Autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5.

Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills. They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting. Most of the activities during our day are hands on activities which include many file folder games and visuals. The students are at school from 9-2 so having a wide variety of activities is important. We are work hard on teaching the students literacy skills, communication skills, fine motor skills and social skills.

My Project

The resources in this project will be used in the classroom to help the students learn their ABC's as well as other literacy skills (rhyming and sequencing). The students will be able learn these important skills through visuals and hands on materials. Students need to be able to identify the letters by pointing and then naming. They also need to learn the letter sounds and beginning reading skills of rhyming and sequencing. The ABC pegboard, ABC circle songs, and ABC felt pieces will be great hands on materials to help aid in letter and sound identification.

These donations will improve my classroom by giving us more activities to use when teaching the ABC's and other related skills.

This is the beginning steps to learning how to read. Knowing how to read will better my students lives as it is an important skill in life. Having activities geared towards letters and sound knowledge will help the students to achieve this goal in a fun and hands on way.
