This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Take a moment to think about your kindergarten experience. Did you just get a feeling of nostalgia, too? Kindergarten was an amazing and fun time that taught you the foundations of reading, writing, and math. My students are getting that same experience, but are in dire need of literacy and math station materials that will place a high cognitive demand on these amazing students.

The children I teach are energetic, wonderful, hardworking students.

They impress me everyday with their awesome attitudes because many of them face challenges in their lives that many of us have not experienced. We are a full day kindergarten class at a Title 1 school. Our school is located in a high poverty urban area. All of our students are entitled to the free lunch program. The student population is 85% Hispanic, 7% African American, 3% Caucasian, and 2% Asian.

My Project

The new station materials will allow the Kindergarten students to apply and practice their math, writing, and reading skills daily in math and literacy stations. At this time in a child's life, a child loves to play games and use hands-on materials; a child doesn't even realize that they are expanding their array of knowledge. The supplies I am requesting supports the children as they develop a love for school early on, especially when learning can be fun and hands-on. Currently, our school has programs that provide worksheets to help the children practice their new skills. The students are five and six years old. Worksheets are not developmentally appropriate at this age and the children have a hard time engaging in worksheets for extended periods of time. I have selected many of these math and literacy materials because I believe that the materials will help my students make connections, and they will use these skills in the real world.

My students will be able to apply what they have learned using the materials, and they'll practice daily in a fun and stress-free environment.

This project will support the students, and place high cognitive demand on each child, as well as set them up for academic success as they transition to First Grade next year.
