Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am an elementary special education teacher and this year I have a group of 12 amazing learners. It is a Specific Learning Disability class and my students have varying backgrounds and needs. Last school year, I worked with upper elementary students and this school year, I am working with Kindergarteners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders. I was reminded of how important manipulatives, games, puzzles, and interactive engaging activities are to our younger students. School can't be fun 24/7 but we can sure try!
My students, especially my Kindergarteners and 1st grade students, need more hands on activities to help them build their letter name recognition, phonemic awareness, number name recognition, and counting skills.
My students have challenges building these foundational skills compared to their peers so they need activities that are hands on. Hands on learning is significant because it keeps students interested, engaged, and promotes learning. When my students are engaged, they are processing information, communicating their ideas and thoughts, and best of all learning! I am confident that the materials in this project will help my students build these essential skills and help them become more advanced readers, authors, and mathematicians.
