This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a bilingual itinerant speech and language teacher who works with children with an autism diagnosis and children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC describes different ways to communicate that supplement or support spoken language. Many students with an autism diagnosis are non-speaking and benefit from AAC devices to communicate their wants and needs. These students use communication apps on an iPad, which acts like an AAC device.

No child should be without a voice!

Every child deserves a tool they can use in the future. If this project gets funded, the iPad will be used daily to model functional communication skills. These skills include communicating wants and needs, describing things, commenting, assisting with reading and writing, and so much more! An AAC device will support my non-speaking students and give them access to functional communication through play-based learning and literacy activities.
