Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with Preschool children classified with Autism in a Title I self contained school in NYC. My students have limited attention spans, poor fine motor and gross motor skills, limited language and limited play skills. They are visual and kinesthetic learners that require various materials and lots of repetition to help them succeed and reach their goals.

As a whole, we encourage independence and celebrate victories big or small.

What keeps their learning momentum going and what motivates them are hands-on interactive activities and toys.

My Project

Pre-K Special Education works on so many skills. These skills are worked on through child-led learning centers. My classroom centers are child led to encourage independence and for students to take ownership of their learning at their rate. One major skill my students work on is fine motor and writing. Currently, our writing is teacher led, with learning materials put away after a lesson. My classroom currently doesn't have a child-led writing center to continue to work on skills that were taught during the teacher led lesson.

A writing center table in the classroom will help my students foster independence and increase engagement all while working on fine motor strength, pre-writing, and writing skills.

The writing center table I have selected will allow students to choose which writing or fine motor activity they wish to continue to practice. There is space to contain writing materials as well as space for pre-determined practice activities. Allowing my students the choice to pick their activity will also greatly reduce behaviors associated with not having the opportunity to choose their learning.
