Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm writing to you in the hope of elevating my classroom environment to match the specialness of my wonderful third graders. I teach a smallish class of eight-to-ten year-olds in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at a rather lovely school, P.S. 257. I say lovely because the administration is superb, and the teaching staff has heart and enthusiasm to spare. What we don't have nearly enough of is money. To provide necessary classroom materials, I have scrounged and searched everything from garage sales to sales bins to the $1 aisle at Target, and yet, there are still some items that I feel are essential to really open up the world of learning for my kids. Namely, reference books--and specifically, world atlases. The days of every classroom with a pull-down map on the chalkboard are gone--or, at least the are in my school. We don't have class maps, and we have only one out-of-date atlas for the students to share. But these kids love geography and considering the lives of those who live both near and far--I was lucky enough to receive a map of the continents and oceans this year, and you wouldn't believe how much curiosity and interest about the world that has been generated just through exposure and access to this simple depiction of Earth. Imagine what they could discover--and know--if each could hold the world in their hands. Thank you for your consideration.
