My Students

Imagine growing up and not having any idea that there is a world outside of where you live. For my students, this is their reality. My students need resources that expose them to the world outside of their community.

I teach third grade in a small, rural town in NC.

My classroom is made up of students who are diverse in ethnicity, economic status, and intellectual ability. However, one thing my students all have in common, is that the majority of their families lack the funds to travel outside of their city; and if given the opportunity to travel, most trips only venture so far as the closest beach or the nearby mountains. Unfortunately, teaching in a small, rural title-one school, my school lacks the funds to provide for additional resources for our classrooms such as magazines that would expose students to the world outside their doors. Yet, these are the very resources my kids need to stimulate their interest in the world around them.

My Project

I would love to be able to use Scholastic News, Geography Spin, and Science Spin to expose my kids to people, places, and events that happen outside of their community. I want my students to understand that there is life and other aspects of culture outside of where they live. I want students to see how other children their age live; and I want them to see the events that are taking place in the world around them. I plan to use these magazines weekly in my classroom. Students will work in groups to read, question, and share the things that interest them in these articles. Because they are written by students their very age, I feel that all of the students in my class, regardless of of intellectual ability, will be able to understand and show interest in them.

By donating to this project, students will be able to understand that the world does not just center around themselves, their friends, and their families.

They'll begin understand the concept of global awareness and thus be more prepared for 21st century skills.
