This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a dual language classroom. Ideally, our learning materials should be available in both Spanish and English but with a DOE budget, we can only get so far. Therefore, I have included items in this project that will specifically promote language, cognitive, and literacy development in both languages, but with a target on the Spanish language as those materials and books are the hardest to find.

Our students are bilingual in Spanish and English to varying degrees.

Most can follow directions in both languages. Read aloud participation varies depending on the students' native language, but the simple enjoyment and attentiveness of a read aloud is present amongst all students. For that reason, I am seeking more materials for the class in Spanish so that there is an equal opportunity of learning and exploration in both languages for students.

My Project

We are a dual language classroom. It is my first year teaching in this kind of instructional setting and find myself lacking Spanish language materials at times. I tend to create many Spanish language flashcards, games, and have made posters and classroom labels bilingual. However, I know that with support and funding, I will have the chance to provide my students Spanish language materials that will support learning in that language.

I have included items in this project that will promote language, cognitive, and literacy development, with an emphasis in the Spanish language.

I want to give an equal amount of exposure to both languages and for that to be possible I need to balance out all the English language materials I already have with new Spanish language ones.

Before dismissal, I always read a book aloud, as my assistants help with packing up the students. Students have told me they like certain authors like Mo Willems, David Shannon, and Dr. Seuss, whose books we have in our library but I would like students to be exposed to the Spanish version of many of these authors' classic stories. Students also enjoy completing puzzles which is why I included the color and counting bilingual puzzles. They'll be stoked to have those in class. Music and songs contribute to language development so I look forward to having the Spanish songs albums in class for our Music and Movement period!
