Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a 6th-8th grade 12:1:1 specialized education teacher in specialized public school in the South Bronx. I teach students with disabilities, where 91% of students receive free or reduced-priced lunch. My class consists of 12 students who are heartwarming and have a love of learning! My students have learning disabilities that range from autism to emotional disturbance. My students benefit from having scaffolds and supports for their learning.

My diverse middle schoolers have incredibly unique personalities and learning needs.

In an integrated setting, many of my students on the autism spectrum are often overstimulated by their peers. Having a safe and calm learning environment will help them regulate those intense, sensory-driven moments which in return can improve emotional and self regulation and increase stamina. Some items that can help aid in this is a bean bag chair, pillows, and revamping our couch with a new slipcover to provide my students with a means to decompress and feel centered.

Due to working in a low income environment, many parents are unable to provide the supplies that their child needs for the upcoming school year. I want to ensure that my students will have the essential school supplies in order to continue their love for learning. I want to be able to support the needs of my students with learning materials both at home and in the classroom.

These hands-on materials and supplies will help further their thinking. My students will benefit from having supplies such as: notebooks, pencils, markers, and paper to support their needs, as well as having supplies to engage in the classroom!

I want my students to engage in learning experiences without feeling ashamed or left out because they do not have supplies.
