Help Mrs. Gaines

A picture is worth a thousand words and I need a DVD capable computer to show the picture. I teach in an inner-city, poverty-stricken community. My high school has a student population of more than 1,200 students with a high free and reduced price lunch population. Our overall attendance is 72%, however, my students are at 96% attendance. I think that is because they enjoy my class, they enjoy learning about business, and because they have goals.

In the morning they walk by people sleeping on the sidewalks and women selling their bodies for a fix. Yet they are determined not to be deterred. Our budget is less than small - it almost does not exist, especially for related arts classes. However, my students are excited about their future and about Career and Technical Education. This is evident by their hard work which caused them to win 1st place last year in two entrepreneurship competitions and 2nd place in The Stock Market game. For which they received awards and recognition. They call me during the week, on the weekend, and over the summer because they are excited about business. We do not have school supplies for our students. I have a technology class, however, my technology is nowhere near state of the art. I do the best I can with what we have.

That is what has prompted me to make this request. The textbook we use in my accounting class comes with a CD-Rom/DVD which has examples of the accounting procedures. However, the computers in my classroom do not have DVD capabilities. So even though I have a smart board and several video examples my students cannot see them. Why? Because I have no way to show the video representation. I also have several videos of ethical/non-ethical situations that I could show in class and use as a discussion starter. However, yet again my computer is not able to play these DVDs or CD-Roms. If this resource is provided I will, not only be able to show accounting demonstrations. This license also comes with permission to make as many copies as I have textbooks. This will allow them to go home and refer to the video while doing homework. I also teach entrepreneurship. We were fortunate enough to be given a DVD camcorder. I would not only be able to show my students documentaries of successful entrepreneurs in America but also videos of themselves. I would be able to burn copies of their presentations for them to take home and show to their parents or just to see for themselves.
