This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My diverse group of special needs students are champions, despite the many challenges they face in our community of Far Rockaway, Queens. Our students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after middle school; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate what their personal goals and visions for their futures are.

My students are looking forward to being as independent while cultivating a love for learning.

My Project

We want to continue to upgrade our reading classroom environment with an emphasis on flexible seating. According to the NEA article “Understanding Universal Design in the Classroom,” the learning space is an important aspect of the whole educational experience: “One cannot have a community of learners without having a positive instructional climate. Instructors help to create this climate by everything that they do, from the way they respond to student questions to the arrangement of the classroom chairs.” For my diverse and special needs students, traditional seating hinders their ability to use the classroom in the ways they need to accomplish the learning goals I set for them as modern learners and global citizens.

The classroom environment should mirror what students will encounter in their future careers, and collaboration, problem solving and meaning making are at the forefront of most job descriptions.

Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration. We seek to provide a comfortable and functional space for learning partners or small groups to try to facilitate conversation. This will allow individual learners a space to read with less distractions. Traditional desks in groups may not foster the personalized, collaborative learning environment my students crave.

Lastly, we need a charging station to securely organize our Kindle e-readers in our flexible space.
