Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I want to give students the best opportunity and learning experience inside and outside the classroom.

My students need a variety of learning experiences, in and out of the classroom!

My students come from hardworking families who are well aware of the opportunities afforded their children. And though they may lack the resources and in many cases the education, there is no shortage of determination. As a result, my school has developed a commitment to provided support for all learners. Recognizing the needs of our students and their families, we have taken a holistic approach to dealing with our students and their families. We are located in a very diverse community in which most people are non-English speaking natives. Through our instilled sense of community, and embracing of diversity, I want to create an environment where everyone has an opportunity to explore learning in and out the classroom.

My Project

This year second graders will visit City Growers to make a real world connection to our Science Curriculum. During our visit students will plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow, develop a simple models to show the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants, and make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Second graders will become empowered by learning to grow their own foods and make lifelong healthy choices.

These experiences will help to build new perspectives about our world and the importance of caring for the things around us. Our city kids will deepen their understanding of scientific concepts connecting natural cycle of food, animals, and their community.
