Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? Many of us, as children, wrote fabulous stories to share with our friends and family and keep forever. But, writing is also one of the most difficult subjects for all elementary school students. School just isn't fun when one struggles with writing.

My third graders in a New York public school go home to houses, apartments or shelters with little to no materials to succeed in school.

This high-achieving third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but struggle to find the resources to do so. Every child comes to school with the desire to learn and become a better student. The students in my school are especially creative and have wonderful ideas to share. The struggle, however, is often in putting their thoughts into written words.

My Project

This proposal is designed with the 3rd grade writer in mind. During this grade, a student is expected to complete at least five writing projects, including personal narratives, fiction stories, non-fiction research, and more. At the beginning of the year students take a notebook and make it their "Writer's Journal." They then gather journal entries throughout the school year. Perhaps by having a more "grown-up" looking journal, my students will be more engaged in the writing process and look forward to keeping entries. I've also noticed that many students LOVE the Amelia's Notebook series, yet are never able to take them out of the school library. This project will bring these books and other useful resources into my classroom for all to use! Finally, what good is a journal without pencils? Every year, my students fly through them! So, by having a pack of pencils each and a personalized case for safekeeping, I hope to prolong the "I don't have a pencil" scenarios!

All students deserve the opportunity to become good writers.

Writing is a subject they will encounter regularly and will need for the rest of their lives. By giving them these resources, you are helping to ensure that these deserving children are given every opportunity possible to find their creative geniuses and put words to paper, now and for years to come!
