Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students and school community are incredible and inspire me every single day. One of the big projects that we do in my Power | Identity | Equity (PIE) Social Studies class is a Theater of the Oppressed-style production, where students use a consensus model to dream up, write, and perform their own play. These plays confront social issues that are the most important in their lives and, with the help of the audience, they brainstorm and act out solutions to speak up to the injustice or push back against the oppression. These productions are unbelievable and blow me away every year.

A new theater floor will help to make that magic happen in this room!

My classroom also doubles as a black box theater, and any staff member in the school can request to use it at anytime. So you are not just supporting my seniors, but you are supporting our entire school community. At some point in the year, every student in the whole school uses this space, and we hope that a more solid material, this black peel-and-stick vinyl, will last for many years to come!

Thank you for your consideration in supporting our student body, over 300 newly-arrived immigrants and refugees from all over the world.
