My Students

I teach Middle School students with a wide range of disabilities. For example, some of the students I teach have been classified as autistic, while others have been diagnosed with Emotional Disturbance and more. Our school focuses on bringing out the best in each child, so that they can be successful in High School and beyond and lead as successful and independent lives as possible.I have often seen the best that my students have to offer when they are properly engaged and excited in the learning environment. This is my goal as an educator and despite the challenges of this current academic year, I applaud my students for their resiliency, and efforts.

At our school, there is a big emphasis on increasing student empowerment.

For example, there are many different clubs in the school, many of which are student-led. They are spaces where students communicate and collaborate as a school community. Some examples include the student council team, the Homework club, and more. Our school also places great emphasis on creating a plan beyond secondary education, and helps with exploring different career paths with the students often. We understand that once students feel confident and empowered, they are unstoppable.

My Project

The changes to the classroom environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic are numerous. One of the most notable ways that it has affected the classes of myself and my colleagues is that it has distanced us from our classes not only physically and has changed how we plan and execute our lessons and how we communicate and collaborate with our classes. Luckily, there are so many resources that allow instructors to reach their students and continue to engage students in exciting, innovative, and accessible ways despite the distance. One of the best resources that I have encountered is the Brainpop educational platform and based on its offerings I feel that it would be best suited for the diverse groups of students that I teach.

Brainpop is a web application that presents information in a visual manner which would be of great benefit for my diverse students many of which are ENL students.

It provides a learning experience that is engaging and exciting and presents topics in a manner that is accessible due to the way that it is presented. Activities such as learning games, and instructional videos allow students to be the center of learning. Brainpop presents instructional materials across different disciplines in all four content areas and beyond which increases the opportunities for interdisciplinary instruction and provides opportunities for students to be assessed whether they are in-person, remote, or learning in the hybrid model.
