Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students need to be challenged. Their ideas, thoughts, and assumptions must be scrutinized in order for them to grow as people. My students this year in American Literature (11th graders) have a pretty good curriculum, but there's a space to add one more great American author: Tennessee Williams.

I teach at an small charter performing arts school in Mesa, AZ.

This is my first year teaching here and I'm already in love with the atmosphere and students here. This is the kind of school where everyone knows each other and the staff is very protective of their students. We're not a rich school, and our students mostly come from low-income backgrounds. We do not have a library, I am the only English teacher, there are very little supplies, and the building was not originally a school.

My Project

The best way for students to gain critical thinking skills, in my experience, is to engage in deep discussions with their peers. It's one thing if I say the way women in society are treated is not okay, but it's another thing entirely if they hear that sentiment coming from a peer. My students two years ago, when I had the opportunity to teach A Streetcar Named Desire , had so many thoughtful discussions. I had students tell me this was the first book they read cover to cover and completely enjoyed. We used A Streetcar Named Desire as a tool to delve into the issues in our society today, and the kids could really connect the characters to current events.

These students deserve the best possible curriculum, despite budget limitations.

Since I am a relatively new teacher, this will be my 3rd year, I feel I can best teach these students with materials I am familiar with and have worked with before. This book, A Streetcar Named Desire left the largest impact on my students of any of the books I have read in my teaching career thus far. I would love to have the opportunity to impact the lives of my new students here in Mesa like I did with my students in Las Vegas.
