Set in an urban district, the high school in which I teach, houses 1800 students, which means I teach 30+ students in one given class (I teach to block schedule, so I will have three classes of 30+ students this school year). This year, I will have the pleasure of teaching 9th grade English Recovery. This class is for students who were not successful the first time when taking 9th grade English.
Due to the economic status of my school district, we have a shortage of technology, which results in many, if not all of my students being without the prior knowledge that technology has to offer them for their future and although I am asking for a generous donation of only one laptop, more would be greatly appreciated. My students are motivated to learn about technology and are aware that they must use technology in college; however, almost all of the students with whom I teach are completely unaware of how to operate the basics of a computer, which includes typing, saving a document and formatting it. I am fearful that my students will be at a disadvantage once they begin college, due to the lack of technology within my school district. I honestly believe they deserve the same opportunities as the surrounding school districts offer their students. My students have been granted a "Promise" of higher education, but without the technological tools they need, their "Promise" of education may be at risk.
This year, my students will be learning about the Six Traits of Writing, reading creative literature as well as a memoir of their choice. These activities will lead to a writing project of the students devising their own memoirs. I would like nothing more than for the students to be proud of their accomplishment by being able to organize, type and produce a quality piece of writing through the use of a computer.
Please know how much this project means to me and how much I know it will mean to my students. They often feel "left-out" and not equal to others with whom have technology available to them. The pride they will feel while typing their memoirs will be a truly inspiring moment to witness. I look forward to the opportunities the students will have available for them if this opportunity is granted to them.
