This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a very diverse group of students. As a Dyslexia Interventionist in a low income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with new challenges on a daily basis especially in Reading. Despite these challenges, they come to school every day. Many of the students are struggling readers and they need books to become proficient readers in order to succeed in school and in life!

I always had a desire to grow struggling readers so I had to dive deeper into developing my knowledge on how to truly help kids.

Therefore, I enrolled in Orton-Gillingham training and began studies of Basic Language Skills with Neuhaus Education Center to learn about multi-sensory language skills to help increase student literacy.

My Project

While working with students with dyslexia and/or reading deficiencies I've learned that when students have achievement gaps there’s a lack of motivation and commitment in their attitude towards school. Therefore, I always look for literature with them in mind. Literature they can read independently and motivate them to be better readers. I also look for literature that they would enjoy during their independent reading time. I chose to add the book No Way! to their libraries because many of my students can relate to the little boy's struggles and often yearn for someone to help them be a better reader.
