My Students

Our urban district has just added French as a second option for the middle schoolers at our school. We are the first of 7 middle schools in the district to offer this option. Many of my students are native Spanish speakers looking to expand their horizons. They are eager learners but need extra supports for building their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills given their various backgrounds and abilities. They deserve a well-rounded opportunity for language learning in spite of limited funding for the subject.

My Project

TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) is a great way for students to learn a language using comprehensible input. It's very difficult to find materials specifically for French language but most of the materials I have chosen can easily be adapted with a little bit of creativity.

The Lakeshore storytelling sets both use books that will be familiar to students already and I even have French translations for several of the books already!

The flannel board and Create-a-scene feltboard series will allow me to create stories of my own based on particular themes that we are learning and The Big Book Storytelling Activity Kits Complete Set can be adapted as well. All I will have to do is translate the stories into French and add the French text to the books themselves (old fashioned cutting and pasting).
