I teach kindergarten in a low-income suburban area in Alabama. Most of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and our school has been designated as a Title 1 school this year. Due to reduced revenues our State Education budget does not include classroom instructional funds.

Literacy, especially comprehension has been a challenge for my children because many lack the pre-school background that would have prepared them to discuss and retell stories, a skill that would enable them to visualize the details of a story.

My students need Storytelling sets and a teaching easel.
Giving children a tangible means for retelling the stories they read together will enable them to develop the ability to visualize and therefore increase their reading and listening comprehension. With your help I hope to offer children the opportunity to practice retelling some of their favorite stories during our daily read-aloud time. Learning to read doesn't stop with the ability to sound-out or decode the words on a page. Children must be able to process the words they read in order to take full advantage of the ability to read. Using the resources from this project I will be able to model for my children how to visualize a story and retell the details of the story to other classmates.

Learning to read and reading to learn doesn't work if children don't develop comprehension skills. Please help me help my children develop this very important skill by supporting this project.
