Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a diverse, first grade, integrated, collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although most students come from low-income homes or homes with limited parental school involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day, ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.

My class of first graders is some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.

My Project

Gingerbread House building is a perfect way for my students to be able to create, build, design and problem solve while having fun working with their classmates. Gingerbread houses are part of many holiday traditions and associated with winter. Most of my students have never had the opportunity to build a gingerbread house, and I would love to give them that experience in school.

Like real engineers, my students will discover what makes a home stand strong and not topple over.

They will need to build a strong foundation for their houses and then design a creative gingerbread house. They will apply numerous mathematical concepts in designing and decorating their houses with the various candies. Please help my little engineers enjoy their STEAM gingerbread house building experience from their home and gain the confidence needed to become future engineers!

Since many of my students have unstable home situations, I want to decorate the classroom for the holiday season by giving each child a little stocking, which I will emblazon with their name, using the paint pen, and hang on the door. I will put the holiday lollipops inside the stocking on the last day of school before winter break.
