Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ask most people and I’m sure they’ll agree that the USA is chock full of amazing places Believe me, you’ll find in crowded cities as well as in wide-open spaces Culinary treats, simply delightful dishes that’ll tantalize and tickle your taste buds Elect to travel across our land and you’ll find that Idaho’s not the only state fond of spuds Fancy deciding to drive cross-country to see our fabulous monuments Grateful you will be going to MA or MO and finding your time well spent Hang out around MS and you’ll thank yourself for enjoying the manors and the music Imagine spending your summers in Florida or Utah. Nevada might do the trick. Just don’t play too hard or eat too many goodies or you’ll get awfully sick Kids like my students come from around the world to settle in this neighborhood Little is what they know about their new land. More is definitely what they should. Many are only certain that they live in Chicago, in IL, in a region called the Midwest Not too often do I find kids who know about CA, CT or a bit about all of the rest Opportunities need to be given to them to learn and then one another they can teach Put books into their hands, quench their thirst, put resources at their reach Surely they’ll receive an excellent education while having miles and miles of fun Thirty students will benefit this year and, for sure, scores more in the years to come Upper Michigan and Death Valley will no longer be mysteries to my delightful 3-0 Volumes of wondrous facts about cities, states, regions and rivers will they know Who knows? With your help, one or two may venture out to all 50 Excursions they’ll have below sea level or atop high mountains they’ll climb You, yes you, can say yes and support these adventurers, these explorers of mine Zzzz, no zzzz, do not let zzzz overcome you before you make up your mind! Our school, William G. Hibbard Elementary School, located on Chicago's northwest side serves a 96% low-income population with an over 20% mobility rate. There are more than 1,000 students enrolled in grades Pre-K through 6. Over 72% of the student body is Latino with 36.4% of the entire school being English Language Learners. All 30 of my 4th graders are ELL. The students in my classroom represent countries from all over the world, including Ecuador, Lebanon, Liberia, Mexico and the Philippines.
