My Students

All of the students at my school have autism, but they are all children who love to be outside and play outside! My students do not get access to a playground or recess.

This means my students rarely get to leave the classroom.

Activities, such as art and music come to the classroom, and snack and lunch are served in the room. My students do not get recess as the general education students are on the playground and our school is not allowed to be there when they are. My students get adapted physical education classes, but the "gym" is merely a small classroom. My students have autism. They are funny, awesome, energetic, smart, growing, and active. Currently, we use various movement programs to get them moving throughout the day since recess and a proper gym class aren't accessible.

My Project

My students need an area where they can be kids and be outdoors, but they also need an environment that is structured. A picnic table would be a great start for this area. It would allow my students to go outside to enjoy their snack or lunch. It would be an area where they can listen to stories, engage in independent reading, or participate in activities with their peers. A picnic area would allow students to be outside while also working on social skills and life skills.

This picnic area could be used to set up a lemonade stand where students can make and then sell lemonade to their peers.

It can be used for a science fair or to allow two classes to get to know each other. The picnic area can even be used for some relay races or a game of tag. This picnic area will be a very special and important place to my students and all of the other students at my school.
