Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special group of 4th and 5th grade students. Many of them are also English Language Learners. We are a TITLE 1 school. All of the students in my class have disabilities which cause them to struggle to learn daily. Each day I am greeted with smiling faces ready to learn.

I teach an amazing group of Special Education Self Contained Students.

They come to school eager and excited to learn. Each of my students are struggling readers who are at levels at least a year and a half behind grade level. They have a difficult time decoding words. As a result they can become discouraged, frustrated, nervous, and anxious which can lead to meltdowns. These students have been together for many years which has helped us become a family. Daily they encourage, help and support each other. As a teacher it is my job ensure they are cared for, listened to, motivated, encouraged, empowered, safe, respected and happy. They are taught to believe in themselves and accomplish anything they put their minds to. My classroom is a place where they feel safe to ask questions and ask for help when they struggle. I am there to support them and create a love for learning.The kids know "Just because something is HARD doesn't mean you shouldn't TRY; you should TRY HARDER.

My Project

A daily conversation in my classroom: "Ms. B do we have any more Flat Stanley books?I have read the four we have in our library. I love reading about him!" said a 5th grade student, as he looks through the library. Another says, "I like those books too! Do we have any more graphic novels? I just read the one about the Titanic. Did you know the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic Ocean?" "Can I read it when you are done? It sounds cool!" says a 4th grader. They are eager to tell me about what they read! This is music to a teacher's ears! My students are excited about reading and want to read more.I would love to say to them, "Yes I have more books. Come choose another book." We have a limited number of books. When students are looking for books they help, encourage and share the books they have enjoyed reading with each other. It is a wonderful experience for them. They struggle daily to read. The use of graphic novels helps to open a new world of non-fiction texts.

My students are struggling readers.

Through fiction book series they have found books and authors they love to read. The use of graphic novels encourages them to read about non-fiction topic with ease. As a teacher it is with great pleasure that I am able to shape young minds to create a love of reading that will encourage them to be life long readers. These books will enable their continued growth as readers. As we say "Nothing is impossible because I'm possible."
