My Students

Brilliant, inquisitive, outgoing are just a few words to describe the kids in my classroom. I teach a special education autistic classroom that is full of visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners. My students enjoy opportunities where they can engage in hands on activities that meet their learning styles. My students possess a willing desire to enhance their learning and increase their independence skills.

Students utilize a curriculum called UNIQUE which is designed for learners with special needs.

The curriculum is paper based and has some online resources for students. At times it is difficult to get students to engage with the material, mostly due to the different learning levels and simplicity of the content. Three out of five students require hand over hand assistance with writing and cut and paste activities. Which is what most of the curriculum offers. Being able to provide them activities that are hands on are IMPERATIVE to their learning.

Coming from neighborhoods of an economic disadvantage and having a disability, students strive to work towards positive outcomes in every situation faced. They are able to persevere beyond their setbacks to become intellectual learners. They TRULY give me purpose in life that's worth fulfilling!

My Project

I teach a variety of different grade levels in my classroom, 1st-5th to be exact. Trying to meet the various needs of students can be challenging. I am not able to extend myself enough to provide one on one assistance that is needed. I have structured my classroom into centers that each child would be able to work independently at their level.

My areas of focus for the materials are on the subjects of ELA and Math as those are two critical areas of students' various needs.

All students struggle with phonemic awareness skills and have speech-language impairments. Another challenge is students' being able to write independently without hand over hand assistance. Students would benefit from being able to work in centers where they can practice handwriting skills, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and vocabulary skills. The listening center would be a great tool to have students work on these areas of need simultaneously. The unique curriculum students utilize does not come with manipulatives for Math, which is hard to engage the students without them. Being able to provide students with clocks, money, rekenereks, and other math supports; students would have access to more hands-on and engaging material to support their learning.

In addition, I would also like to provide a more organized and comfortable setting to assist students with transitions. Providing students with flexible seating options in centers such as wobble chairs and balance balls would help them to stay seated longer and cause fewer disruptions. The UNIQUE curriculum comes with 30 lessons that are currently organized in a binder. To give students access I'd like to store it in a mailbox on a book/shoe shelf where students could also turn in work in their personal storage bin.
