My Project

I want to create a Sensory Corner for my autistic students to offer a safe, calming space, where they can self-regulate and engage in activities that support emotional, sensory, and cognitive development.The textured items will offer tactile input that is soothing, which will help students focus better and transition between tasks. Similarly, the weighted animals and pads, will provide deep pressure, which has a calming effect on the nervous system and also helps students feel more grounded, as it reduces sensory overload and improves focus, crucial, for their ability to engage in learning activities.The fiber optic lights will provide a soothing atmosphere that helps students feel more at ease, as a tool for relaxation and focus during challenging tasks.

These sensory items will assist my students with self-regulation, as they reduce stress and agitation.

The calm corner will give them access to tools to manage their feelings and behaviors independently. By offering items that allow students to choose the type of sensory input they need, self-awareness and self-advocacy will increase students' attention and participation in learning activities, thereby, leading to improved academic outcomes.

My students are unique because they experience the world in ways that differ from neurotypical children. They are incredibly detail-oriented, creative, and capable of deep focus, when provided with the right environment. When their sensory needs are met, their ability to hyper-focus on specific tasks or areas of interest, will produce exceptional results as they approach problem-solving and creativity in innovative ways.

The sensory corner is not just about calming them; it’s about meeting their needs in a way that enables them to thrive. By embracing their sensory differences, my students will build confidence and succeed both academically and socially.
