Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are almost all from low income families, and most have returned to the school building this year for the first time in 18 months. My students range from honors, to English language learners, to those with learning supports.
They all love being in school, and love to learn.
As we deal with the most recent covid surge, which impacts attendance across New York City Public Schools, my attendance is higher than that of the city as a whole, because students in our community crave the care, connection, and safety they feel in school.
My Project
Many of my middle school students come from low income families, and often come to school hungry, depending on free lunch and breakfast to make it through the day.
While lunch and breakfast are free for all, often the portions are not enough to satisfy students, and they continue to suffer from hunger throughout the day, and are unable to focus on their classwork.
With these snacks, students will have the ability to fill that hunger pain, which will help them be more successful in completing their classwork resulting in more complete work and higher grades.
