My Students

The iPad technology has been called a "GAME CHANGER FOR AUTISM". The same can be said about interactive whiteboards, which take the concepts behind an iPad and brings them to a much larger, group oriented scale. The learning capacity of my students would be greatly impacted by this addition.

Our class is a Pre-K for students between the ages of 3-5 with special needs.

Their disabilities differ, but most are placed on the Autism spectrum. We are located on an elementary school campus and are the only Pre-K in the district. My students have their days, planned full of interventions, assessments and therapy sessions. They are all such little troopers that face great difficulties daily. When they come to school, I want them to be excited and happy. School should be challenging, but there's no reason it can't also be fun! Despite their disabilities, the students in my classroom are just like any other preschoolers. They love coming to school and exploring their environment in hands-on ways. We love music, dancing, and art (especially the messy kind!), but our favorite time of the day is story time! If you were to visit our classroom, you would probably be introduced to our favorite book, "Pete the Cat," within the first five minutes of your arrival (probably sooner!)

My Project

Students' abilities to attend to lessons and learn, increase when interacting with the iPad Touch technology; however, use of the iPad is still limited to individual lessons, or groups of 1 or 2. The screen simply is not big enough for whole group or class lessons. Students with Autism not only need to learn about the ABC's and 123's, but they are also working on social skill development. Often times students with Autism need to learn how to be a learner in a group environment, a skill that is essential in later grades. The interactive whiteboard technology will provide the perfect platform for making our morning circle time and miniature preacademic lessons more accessible for students with Autism. This will be especially beneficial to my students who have limited verbal abilities, as they will be able to interact with the lesson without needing to use words. The software requested will provide age appropriate, preacademic lessons for an unlimited amount of learning and discovery!

The addition of technology in the form of an interactive whiteboard will allow my preschoolers with Autism to not only learn preacademic skills, but will also provide critical experience on how to be a productive and appropriate member in a group or classroom environment.
