My Students

Thirty to Fifty percent of the children in my classroom are children who are identified with special needs. Disabilities include: speech and language delays, autism, developmental delays, and physical disabilities. Our program also includes, typically developing peers, English Language Learners as well as low-income families. Our Early Childhood Program is located in an Elementary School Building in a separate wing that is comprised of now five classes. Students attend classes for a half day either in the morning or the afternoon.

Starting with the 2016-17 school year, our Early Childhood Program became a lottery-based system, replacing the fee-based system, thus eliminating the monthly fee for students.

My Project

A well-chosen classroom rug can help students establish boundaries, learn about personal space and help young children develop great "Be Ready Skills!"

A shape to call my own, will help students understand with clear boundaries where and how their body should be during large group activities.

The current rug in my classroom was purchased when I had only 5-10 students at a time. It was great for that environment as it had just enough space for them. However now with a changing program and more students, more defined areas would support more students in developing their learner skills. Sitting still is difficult for young children, however with the use of brain breaks, yoga and other movement activities built into large group activities. Having each child have a space to sit helps not only their understanding of space but it can quickly cut down transition time between movement breaks and listening activities, and pressures of finding that perfect spot on the rug.
