My Students

I teach and learn along side visually impaired 3rd-5th moderate to severe multiple disabilities children. My students are part of the 20% of our schools population who are in special ed and or visually impaired. We are a Title I school where 80% of the students receive free or discounted meals including my classroom.

In my classroom we focus on community, collaboration, vocational skills and independence.

My students are unique. They all have bright spirits that shine and sparkle everyday. My students are differently-abled and express their talents daily in the classroom in different ways.

Some use ASL with verbal sentences. Some use alternative forms of communication such as a button with a recorded saying and others simply tell me with their words.

My students also read & write differently from each other. Some read braille and use a brailler to write. Others use large-high-contrast print with thick lines to learn their words and letters.

We are a class of critical thinkers of all abilities. We root for each other daily to see growth and change in everyone.

Our Motto(s) are: Making mistakes are proof that we are trying and everything new in school hard at first!

My Project

Sensory lessons for healthier learning!

My students deserve a multi-sensory, musical, tactile, vocational and clean classroom.

They need a vacuum to help teach them responsibility and accountability for their messes in the classroom . A cordless one will help them navigate and learn trunk strength to aid them in their physical fitness. Mop pads for our classroom mop will teach them concepts of push and pull while standing upright and hygiene skills.

Vocational skills are a must as well! The gum ball machine, and butterfly care cage will teach them the fine motor wrist-turns and unzip skills need to navigate the career world.

Sensory bins and sensory moments are not only the most engaging part of my student’s day it really helps them comprehend their tactile lessons. They should be able to explore diverse dolls like them and other toys they can react to all five sense focusing on sense of touch and hearing of course!

The items that will help them include, a floor piano so they can practice their left and right tracking movements with their whole body for literacy and braille, a microphone so they can hear their own voice with confidence, a singing bowl for deep breathing at the end of the day, texture squares for pre-braille skills,a touch lights board for letter practice, pop toobs for push and pull concepts, a play tunnel for concepts of in and out, colored tape for students with CVI for eye gaze focus, sound books so they can read with pride, theraputty to practice their fine motor pincer grasp, party lights that are sound activated to learn cause and effect, yuck-e-ball to practice squeeze and release, a laminator to protect their art work and adapt their books with braille, and a circuit machine to create tactile, books and more!
