Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in kindergarten - second grade, and are working on building their communication skills. This year in our classroom, students will have the opportunity to participate in both group and independent sensory activities. These sensory activities will engage my students' senses - touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste.

"What are the benefits of sensory play" you might ask.

Benefits of sensory play include the development of language and fine/gross motor skills, helps with cognitive growth, fosters social interactions, develops problem solving skills, encourages experimentation, and builds creativity!

During some of our sensory activities, especially group lessons, students will be using a step-by-step visual recipe. We will use the printer to create visual resources so that our students can work on essential skills such as following directions, sequencing, life skills, and math enrichment.

One of our favorite group sensory recipes is creating bubbles! My students enjoy following the step by step procedure to create a bubble mixture, and then playing with bubbles at the end of the lesson. The bubble machine will be used to reinforce my students at the end of the lesson.

It would be beneficial for my students to have the rice, freezer bags, glue, and ice cube trays, as these are just some of the materials we will need to create some of our recipes. Having this variety of sensory items will ensure that we are able to complete a variety of sensory recipes throughout the school year, thus keeping my students interested with these diverse recipes.

The fidget toys such as the sensory suction toys, monkey noodles, alphabet letters, and wiggle seats will be used to help my students remain seated and engaged for longer periods of time during lessons.

Overall, by engaging in sensory activities, my students will learn responsibility and develop independence.
