A Sensational Room

Help me give my students a trampoline, bean bags and Legos to help them regulate their own behavior.

My Students

The students that will benefit from this project are from a low-income school in a large city of Michigan. 87% of the school's population qualified for free and reduced lunch. My classroom consists of 7 students grades 2-5 who have an Autism diagnosis.

My eclectic mix of students are friendly, raw, energetic, reclusive, and outgoing.

Upon observation, you'll notice stimming, echolalia, and impulsivity. Of the 7 students, 4 are nonverbal-limited verbal and often begin their day agitated or in tears. Either extreme causes a delay in the learning process. We use a variety of calming strategies that change from day to day and would love to foster independence by having them address their individual needs in a way that they can depend on.

My Project

The SensAtional Room will address multiple deficits and will be the place to go when there are meltdowns as well as the place to look forward to for a job well done. The trampoline is an automatic de-stresser as are the bean bag chairs. All of my students enjoy them and they'll bring comfort. The students enjoy jumping and laying in the chairs or sandwiching themselves between them instead of sitting on them. Likewise the fine motor manipulatives will gratify their sense of touch.

Self-regulation plays a huge part in gaining independence and acceptance.

Each item can assist in helping my students to regulate their behavior and participate in the academic and/or daily living skill lessons. Just knowing there's a place to go when they feel out-of-sorts will be a comfort. I'm certain with the implementation of the SensAtional Room I'll see a decrease in meltdowns which translates into more time for meaningful learning activities.
