My students need flexible seating options within the classroom to improve focus and adapt to the sensory needs of a growing number of students within our population. They need Wobble stools, floor cushions, reading pillows, and balance balls.

My Students

I serve a very unique mix of children in a third grade classroom in the Ozarks. I love them everyone! However, over the past few years I have noticed a change in the number of students with sensory needs growing at a progressive rate.

Serving a significant number of students with a low socio-economic status proves so rewarding when you are able to provide them with experiences and opportunities that otherwise they may never know.

I love to see the moments of sheer happiness on their faces.

My Project

In an ever-changing world, the challenge to capture the sustained attention of our students is escalating. With all the benefits that come from improving technology, there are also bumps along the way. Children still need direct instruction from an individual teacher to give them the opportunities to grow in their conversational skills and intellectual stamina.

With students growing up in front of "screens" for significant amounts of time, it is proving more and more difficult to hold their attention in a classroom.

Any avenue we can provide for them to release energy, but sustain focus will prove to have positive results. One way that I would like to do this is through the options of flexible seating. I plan to have wobble stools, floor cushions, reading pillows, and balance balls in my classroom as choices for seating preferences. Students who prefer to work at desk in a seat other than a traditional school chair will be given the opportunity. Also, students who prefer to work away from a desk all together will be provided different options for floor seating.

The goal is for each student to have a seat/spot of their preference that will either allow them a way to release energy and/or find a calming work environment.
