Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working at our school in Brooklyn is a dream, and it's all because of our students. While we are a Title I school, we're one of a handful of schools in NYC that only admits recent immigrants and refugees.

Our students come from over 30 countries and speak over 35 languages.

This years seniors come from Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Philippines, Senegal, Yemen, and more.

Project-based learning, student choice at every turn, and collaboration among both students and staff are what makes our school run so well.

I have seniors, and I absolutely LOVE sharing time and learning from them in their final year of high school before heading off into the world.

My Project

Some of my students are voracious readers. Others say they never found a book they liked. Still some say they've never read a whole book. One of my goals every year is to get to know each student's book style - what they're into or could be/ would be into, what they love, what kind of escape they would want to have, what they could get lost in, etc.

With so many different stories out now from diverse authors, I have a much better chance of finding that special book for each student.

The books here will update and add to our collection! I'm so excited to be back in a classroom and holding physical books again and hope we can continue to do so safely all year.
