My Project

As an educator working with English Language Learners, Latinos Unidos Club students, and the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) Club, I see firsthand the stress and anxiety my students carry. Many face discrimination, anti-immigrant legislation, and harmful rhetoric in the media, while others struggle with ongoing attacks on LGBTQ+ rights. This takes a toll on their concentration and overall well-being.

Now more than ever, my students need a peaceful space to decompress.

Help me create a Calm Corner in my classroom—a space where students can take a break, manage stress, and reset before returning to their day.

Recently, not only have my immigrant families been under a lot of additional stress, but so have our school's LGBTQ+ youth. My English Language Learners and Latinos Unidos Club students have expressed fear over ICE raids in nearby communities, and I’ve watched their anxiety grow. Likewise, my GSA students—who recently wrote letters to legislators advocating for their rights—felt the emotional toll of their activism. While I was grateful to offer beading materials from a previous DonorsChoose project as a way to decompress, I realized they needed more. Many students stop by my classroom throughout the day when they need a break, and I want to create a space that fully supports their emotional well-being.

I am requesting a classroom rug, two comfortable chairs, anxiety putty, and stress balls to establish a Calm Corner in my room. Whether students choose to read, squeeze a stress ball, or write in a journal, having a dedicated self-care space will help them regulate emotions and manage stress in a healthy way.
