Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The past year and a half have been incredibly isolating for many students, especially our middle schoolers! Many of the students here at my school have been virtually learning since March of 2019! Through this time they have struggled to stay motivated during long days of Zooms, many while taking care of younger siblings and/ or dealing with technology issues and poor Wifi. We are just now offering in person learning every day! And while we are together again, many students are still feeling lonely and overwhelmed at the idea of socializing.

Students must have a Safe Space as they reconnect with each other and themselves.

My Project

My classroom will be open to all as a Safe Space during lunch and after school for 6th-8th grade:

I would like to turn my classroom into a Safe Space of belonging- of celebration and reconnecting through fun and friendship!

This will require board games, novels for kids to pair up and read together, and journaling. By offering fun and focussed activities, it will reduce the anxiety of socializing, students will gain confidence, and friendships will bloom again.

My Project

A Safe Space during lunchtime will give students a place where they know they are wanted and welcomed! This will be a "no phone zone", where in-person friendships and relationships can bloom.

Many of my students do not have access to games, books, and journals at home.

They may not have a room to bring friends over to play in. Some do not have a quiet place to journal and write down their feelings either.

Our Safe Space will give students social games, high-interest novels, and journaling for much needed reflection.

I know we will see students regain their confidence and make friendships again. They will create bonds with one another as they play together, read together, and share reflections and experiences in their journaling.
