Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wooden Chairs, Metal Chairs! All the students can do is sit on those chairs. They used to roll around on the class rug, skip, hop, dance, lay down, and so much more while learning. We've improvised for circle time, we set up chairs in a circle now.The students always end up saying, "we need a rug."

My students are in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade.

We are in a high need school. My students are all special education students with different learning needs. Some of the students are autistic, learning disabled, etc. Some of the students are from foster homes, or surrounding shelters. They need a lot of opportunities to practice working together, sharing, cooperating, and collaborating. The students are determined and push though their weaknesses each and every day in order to accomplish their learning goals. They love to laugh and many of them are contemplative. While they spend time working on their individual goals throughout the day, they enjoy coming back together to share their learning experience with their classmates. This is often accomplished during rug time where we sing, read poetry, read books, practice turn and talk discussions with partners. During free play, many of the students grab their preferred activity and head for the rug.

My Project

During morning meeting, the students meet on the rug to practice daily calendar routines. They learn about taking turns through "turn and talk" topics. This is when they find a friend next to them and make predictions, share ideas, etc. Many of the students enjoy music and movement. As part of our morning routine we sing and dance to various learning songs. The students return several times throughout the day to the rug to practice new skills. The students will continue to build on their communication skills, practice new strategies to solve problems, and develop their reading skills with the help of this community building rug.

By helping my students to realize their wish of getting a new rug, you will be contributing to their shared learning experience.

Additionally, you will be helping them to grow as a community of learners. They are learning skills that will help them for years to come.
