Reading aloud to young children is one of the most effective way of enhancing their interest in reading. I am a Kindergarten teacher in New York where the needs of the children come first. The majority of the children in the school are from low income families. To begin our school day, I usually gather my students on a rug in the designated meeting area and read aloud to them. The children would then return to their desks and write their response to literacy We had been using a rug that was borrowed from another teacher. Unfortunately, I had to return the rug at the end of the school year, this will result in our meeting area without a rug. The students will loose out on this valuable teaching time. My students and I would greatly appreciate a new rug for our meeting area so that we will be able to continue our daily routine.
