Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an early childhood elementary science teacher in a low socioeconomic area. My position allows me the privilege of servicing all the students on a weekly basis. The student population consists of general and special education students Pre-K through 2nd grade. Even at this young age my students show great potential for learning science.

Plants are a part of the early childhood science curriculum. My young scientists have shown great interest in this topic over the years and we have planted different plants around the small planting areas of the schoolyard. Due to seasonal weather conditions, outdoor observations of plants is not always possible. I would like to continue to develop my students' love for science and learning by starting a green house in the school for all the students to use. There is adequate space for this project in the school but not the funds for supplies. As I mentioned previously my students come from low income families so parent funding is not an option for me.

I am currently gathering supplies for my scientists to begin an indoor green house. Teacher donations of small garden tools, seeds and gloves have been collected. I have also applied for a small grant through a gardening supply company to cover the expense of the soil, watering cans and fertilizer. We have a great growing spot with floor to ceiling windows to allow for natural light. The students and I have discussed what else we would need to make this green house project a success. Due to space tiered planting stations would be best for the students to work with. I have researched different companies to find planting stations that would best suit the various heights of my students. This green house will provide my students a better understanding of plants and how they grow. The students will learn responsibility by caring for the plants on a regular basis. Working together with other class members and adult staff will improve interpersonal skills and cooperation. Through growing vegetables the students will gain a better understanding of the nutritional value of food. This knowledge may be shared with family members at home which may result in an improvement in eating habits.

Your help in starting us off with needed planting stations that will make the most of our space will be most appreciated. You can help my little scientist gain a better knowledge of plants, a sense of pride in their project and the chance to enjoy learning. I am determined to make this green house experience happen for my little scientists. Your help in purchasing these needed supplies will make it a better experience.
