Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is full of fun, dedicated students who are passionate for more than just literacy and math. From the arts to sports, our students crave opportunities to try new experiences.

We are a Title I school that has been continuously improving and expanding our music program.

We follow the Orff Schulwerk approach, where students connect with music though speech, movement, singing, drama, and playing pitched and unhitched percussion. As we have expanded our program, students are learning many more songs and using instruments in valuable ways--to make melodies, play borduns, and improvise. We are looking to continue to expand the program through more hands-on experiences for children to read and play music.

My Project

We recently received a felt board to use in our music classroom. It was only the younger students who wanted to use it but the older ones too! Students are so engaged when they can put the next part of the story on the felt board. We hope to continue to incorporate engaging texts in the music classroom, to help with literacy concepts such as sequencing, predicting, vocabulary building, while teaching essential music vocabulary like timbre, pitch, volume, and tempo. Along with the felt boards, the song mitts will allow students to have a visual when learning new songs. Student also need to become musically literate and be able to notate their own songs. Using dry erase boards will give them the opportunity for constantly be writing their own music. Students always benefit from positive reinforcement in academic settings and feel proud through incentives such as stickers and bookmarks.
