My Project

The "Breathe for Change" training is designed for educators to build the skills needed to facilitate wellness and social-emotional learning in the classroom. “Breathe for Change” also incorporates inclusive and trauma-informed yoga classes. Integrating SEL, Yoga, and mindfulness practices within our current school counseling program will make it more comprehensive in meeting the needs of our students and school community. Research demonstrates that incorporating SEL into the curriculum reduces depression, anxiety, stress, and social withdrawal in students. Yoga has been shown to benefit students' academic performance. It enhances individuals' ability to concentrate, reduce stress, increase self-awareness and consciousness, and promote self-regulation, behavioral maturity, and emotional intelligence. Not to mention, yoga builds self-confidence. Mindfulness practices, on the other hand, demonstrably improve focus, attention, self-control, and academic performance.

This training will empower me with the skills and abilities to help my students help themselves throughout their lives.

I work at a Title I school and I teach students with a wide range of disabilities, including autism, ADHD, specific learning disabilities, and sensory needs. Many of my students also come to me having suffered from or currently suffering from family trauma such as abuse, neglect, and homelessness. Having ADHD and sensory needs myself, I understand how beneficial mindfulness and movement, like yoga, have been to me and my life and I only wish I had learned these techniques earlier in life.
