My Students

My class is in a public Montessori school serving children in K3 through 8th grade. Our school serves children who come from homes with high poverty rates and many of my students have special needs. In our 1st through 3rd grade classroom, we focus on academic and practical life skills that children need to be successful.

Our class uses cooking as a multidisciplinary way to create a community.

As the children cook, they employ math and reading skills, learn about history and culture, and practice sharing and teamwork.

My Project

Cooking in the Montessori classroom allows children a creative and fun way to explore a variety of subjects. Students explore

- botany and zoology

- health and nutrition

- fractions, ratios, and measurement

- reading and writing

- history, and culture

When the children cook, they research foods, shop for ingredients, read directions, and share their results.

We have some basic cooking and cleaning items in our classroom so the supplies on our shopping list are meant to complete our classroom kitchen. Our classroom is fairly small, so we will keep supplies for cooking on the rolling cart, allowing it to be moved easily around the classroom. We already have an oven, but my students love making soup and sauteed vegetables, so the double burner will allow them to make these healthy items. The blender will allow the children to make healthy smoothies and pureéd soups. Basic kitchen utensils, pans, and other supplies will allow the children to make a wide variety of different, healthy foods. Cookbooks will inspire the children to try new things, and the recipe cards will allow children to share their favorite recipes. Of course, cleaning up is an important part of any cooking lesson, so we'll need plenty of dish soap and sponges!

Cooking allows children to learn practical life skills that will support their health now and in the future. They learn to budget, how to prepare food, and what is needed to bring together a healthy meal. Eating together gathers everyone as a community.
